ABOUT THE RICHMOND SYMPHONY
The Richmond Symphony was founded in 1957 under the artistic direction of its first conductor, Edgar Schenkman. His successor, Jacques Houtmann, took the baton in 1971, followed in 1987 by George Manahan. In 1999, Mark Russell Smith began his tenure as the Symphony’s fourth music director. The Symphony performed only three concerts in its inaugural season; today the orchestra and its component ensembles make more than 200 public each year.   The Symphony has been a member of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s Orchestra Program since its inception in 1999. In addition, the Richmond Symphony has received seven awards for adventurous programming from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) and is a founding member of the Sphinx Commissioning Consortium, which is dedicated to building diversity in classical music.
