Thanksgiving in Richmond

November 21, 2017 | Richmond limousine service | Randy Allen

Thanksgiving is the perfect time for sitting back, relaxing, and enjoying some quality time with family and friends. If you are ready to venture out of the house after all that turkey and general merriment, then look no further than our top picks for things to do during Thanksgiving weekend in Richmond.

  • GardenFest of Lights

This Richmond holiday tradition kicks off for another year on November 24th, featuring over half a million stunning twinkly lights in the grounds of Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens. Come along between 5pm and 10pm to marvel at the spectacular light displays set up to enhance the natural beauty of the grounds and experience the many different activities on offer including story-telling, Santa dinners, holiday crafts, and musical entertainment. The event also showcases special hand-crafted botanical decorations and each night visitors can enjoy model trains, holiday dinners, and a fire pit with s’mores and hot chocolate on offer. Tickets are $13 for adults and $8 for children under 12, and children under 3 even go free! Book early and make sure you don’t miss your chance to experience this spectacular event.

  • Maymont Mansion Holiday Tours

For six weeks during the holiday season, Maymont Mansion is bedecked in festive splendor and visitors are invited to take a special tour to experience the house in all its Victorian grandeur. The Romanesque-style mansion was originally completed in 1893 and was home to the Dooley family for three decades before it was bequeathed to the City of Richmond in 1925. During the Holiday Tours visitors get a real taste of the holidays as The Dooley’s would have known them, with opulent evergreen decorations and a beautiful 12-foot Christmas tree decorating the center of the house. Tours run daily between 12pm and 5pm, with the exception of Thanksgiving Day itself, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

  • Toys of the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s exhibition

This Virginia Historical Society exhibition focuses on the cultural impact of childhood toys dating from the 1950’s through to the 1970’s. As well as being representative of the joys of childhood, they also capture important stories about their inventors, the adults who bought them, and the child-rearing experts who judged them. Learn all about the fascinating history of Barbie, Mr. Potato Head, Slinky, and Spirograph as you take a trip down memory lane. The exhibition runs until December 31st and tickets cost $10 per person, with under 18’s going free.

  • Richmond ‘Tacky Lights’ Tour

An annual holiday tradition, the ‘tacky lights’ tour of Richmond takes in homes decorated with the most over-the-top light displays you can imagine. The results are truly breathtaking, with houses featuring an array of delights including thousands of brightly colored lights, life-sized nativity scenes, reindeers, Santa and his sleigh, 12 days of Christmas, novelty blow up decorations, woodlad scenes, and snowmen. At 1411 Pennsylvania Ave, owner Brett Aliotti dresses up as a ‘live Grinch’ on certain nights and has become a Richmond tradition in the process. Two of the outlandish ‘tacky lights’ homes in Richmond will even be featured as part of a competition shown on national TV this year.

Whether it’s a tour of the holiday lights or you simply want to enjoy being transported to your chosen activity without the stress of driving and parking, let our Richmond limo service take care of it so you can enjoy quality time relaxing and enjoying the festivities with your family.
