So, you’re planning to apply for that dream job in 2018, but in a competitive marketplace how can you be sure that your resume will stand out to a recruiter, or even get read? Follow our top tips below to make your resume clear and approachable so you can stand the best chance of getting invited for that all-important interview.
Many companies will use software that scans your resume for certain keywords linked to the particular industry or the job role, weeding out any that don’t fit this criteria before they even get to a recruiter. Even if that’s not the case, you need to be sure to do your research and include words or phrases the recruiter might be looking for – use the job description to get a good idea of what these might be, then make sure they stand out on the page. Don’t just throw them in anywhere, though – you need to ensure they are used sensibly and in relation to your own experience.
Quality counts over quantity when it comes to your resume, so don’t just throw all your achievements, qualifications, and experience onto the page even though they might not be relevant. Be focused and target your resume to the particular job role, and try to keep it to one page if you can – a recruiter is much more likely to read it if it doesn’t look too lengthy and daunting as they will have very limited time to look through all the applications they receive.
- Write a targeted objective statement
Make sure you include an objective statement at the top of your resume that draws all your experience together and makes the case for why you would be the best fit for the job. It is worth taking the time to get this right – it is likely to be the first (or only) piece of information the recruiter will read before they make a judgment on your suitability.
Try to use lists and bullet points to break up large chunks of text. Recruiters will appreciate information in bite-sized, easily accessible chunks so they can scan your resume and pick out the information they need quickly and easily. You want to make it as simple as possible for them to see why you are a good fit for the job!
- Focus on your accomplishments
Don’t use too many arbitrary claims about being ‘reliable’ or a ‘hard worker’ – show the recruiter why this is the case with quantifiable accomplishments wherever possible. Anyone can write a list of desirable attributes, but you need to prove to the recruiter that you actually do possess these skills, so make sure you do this throughout the entirety of your resume to ensure the recruiter is compelled to keep reading.
If you follow these tips you’ll give yourself a much greater chance of standing out from the crowd and landing that coveted interview, but when you need to make sure you’re there on time without the worry of parking or the stress of navigating to a new part of town, why not use our reliable, hassle-free Virginia car service?
