How to Build Your Energy Levels at Work

Your daily business life is packed out with a seemingly endless stream of tasks and activities, so how do you maintain high energy levels to ensure you do your best work while avoiding complete burnout? Follow our handy tips below to give your energy levels a much-needed boost throughout the day.

  • Eat well

It can be tempting to reach for high-sugar, high-fat fast food or snacks when you desperately need a quick energy boost, but this can be counter-productive. While these types of foods might give you an initial rush they ultimately lead to a rapid crash in energy levels leading to increased lethargy. Go for slow-release carbohydrates such as oat cereals and whole grains, then mix in plenty of protein such as chicken, eggs, or pulses which will help you maintain high levels of energy and concentration throughout the day.

  • Do your most intensive tasks in the morning

Don’t put off that big task you’ve been dreading until later in the day – research has shown that tackling the big jobs first-thing will make you far more productive and ultimately yield better results. You’ll get a boost of satisfaction from completing such a task in the morning, which will motivate you to work on other less demanding projects during the afternoon when energy levels are generally more likely to dip.

  • Take a break

Just because you have looming deadlines and limited time to work towards them doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take a break. While you might think it’d be more productive to keep working through scheduled lunch or mid-morning breaks, this can actually lead to burnout and a dip in energy levels as your body and mind become too worn out to perform at their best. It is therefore important to keep taking regular breaks, no matter how busy you might be, in order to maintain energy levels and keep your mind fresh.

  • Hit the gym before work

Working out first thing in the morning before you start work is a great energy booster. It will enhance your metabolism and put you in a positive frame of mind to tackle all the day can throw at you and is an effective way to reduce stress levels, too.

  • Don’t put too much pressure on yourself

Try not to feel too much pressure to complete every single task on your to-do list – be kind and cut yourself some slack. As long as you are doing your best to work through the tasks you have then you should take satisfaction in a job well done. There is nothing more demotivating than feeling guilty or pressured to do more and more, but remember you only have so many hours in the day, and you are only human! Reminding yourself regularly that you can’t do it all and setting some realistic daily targets will boost your energy levels and give you belief that you can get these tasks done.
