Having excellent leaders who can motivate a team to perform to the best of their abilities is an invaluable asset to any business. Good leadership takes many different skills, but here is our pick of the essential qualities you need to nurture in order to lead a successful team.

  • Communication skills

  • Accountability

Taking responsibility and maintaining accountability when things go wrong is a critical aspect of being a good leader. You are responsible for your team, and you must take any issues or challenges on board as your own – this is all part of being in a position of authority and should never be shied away from. Likewise, when things go well you can take credit for the effectiveness of your leadership and let yourself be rewarded accordingly, but make sure staff are also acknowledged for their hard work.

  • Encouraging teamwork

As an effective leader you must learn to encourage your staff to work well as a team, where they will be most effective. To do this you should foster an environment of inclusivity, where all voices are heard equally, and staff aren’t afraid to put forward ideas to one another. You could encourage regular meetings between certain groups of staff, or ask them to work together on a specific project in order to develop new ideas. You should also lead by example and work together on projects with other staff members or senior leadership in order for others to see how it should be done.

  • Fostering creativity

You should always try to encourage your staff to be innovative and creative. This way the best ideas will come to the surface and you will encourage further staff development. Make sure that they have a safe platform across which ideas can be communicated without fear of negative judgment or recriminations – this way you’ll give the most creative ideas an opportunity to be heard.

  • Planning

Good leaders should also be good planners – by planning and anticipating potential challenges or issues down the line you can protect your team against difficult or potentially problematic scenarios, and it will also provide you with opportunities to lead your team in a new and more lucrative direction, too.
