How to Get the Best Meals When You Fly

November 14, 2017 | Virginia limousine service | Randy Allen

Constant airline travel can leave you drained and exhausted, so it is important to keep your energy levels up by eating good meals and healthy snacks regularly. Although it can be difficult to stick to a routine of set mealtimes, it is possible to get a decent meal when you fly. Follow our tips below to make sure you get the best experience on offer.

  • Eat at the airport

Many shorter flights or budget airlines don’t offer meals – although most do usually have some snacks you can purchase on board at a premium price. Either way, it is best to eat in advance at the airport if you possibly can. You’ll generally have a much better range of options and higher quality food that isn’t restricted to being reheated in an airplane galley kitchen. This way you’ll get something you actually want to eat and will keep you full up for longer.

  • Order the special meal option

If it is possible to pre-order your meal when you book your ticket, try selecting a special dietary requirement such as vegan or gluten free. You will usually find that cabin crew will prepare these special meals first, and therefore you will be served before passengers with regular meals. Obviously keep in mind that you may be served a meal that does not contain some of the usual components of airline food, but this can be a great option if you are keen to eat quickly once you are on the plane.

  • Choose the stew!

According to the experts, stews stand up best to reheating in aircraft kitchens and will taste the most similar to something you might eat cooked fresh in a regular restaurant. Pasta, chicken breast, and fried foods are the ones to avoid as the quality of the food suffers during the chilling and reheating process.

  • Upgrade your meal

A lot of passengers don’t realise that even if you are sitting in economy it is often possible to upgrade your meal (for a fee) to a first class or business class option – just remember to carefully check out the choices when you book your ticket. If that’s not possible, ask the cabin crew once you’re on board – they could be carrying additional meals that they don’t need and night be able to upgrade yours for a small cost.

  • Bring snacks

Whilst many airlines offer complimentary snacks even on shorter flights, it is always a good idea to bring your own selection if you can – you never know when turbulence, hunger, or a shortage of food on the plane might occur and this will also mean you can bring along healthier alternatives to whatever the airlines have to offer. If you travel regularly with the same airline, bringing your own snacks can also add a bit of variety to the usual selection.
