You’ve done all your packing and wrapped up those final few tasks at the office, but when you are preparing to leave your home for long business trips the thought of securing it effectively can give you sleepless nights. Follow our top tips to ensure that your home stays as safe as possible whilst you travel.
- Get a friend or neighbor to check regularly
One of the best ways to ensure that there are no security problems whilst you are away from home is to get someone to check in on your house whilst you’re gone. This will give you peace of mind in case something has gone wrong whilst you aren’t there – just make sure that you and your friend or neighbour know how to get in touch with each other whilst you’re away, so they can notify you if there are any problems.
An easy way to make sure your house looks occupied even whilst you’re away is to use lighting timers. You can fit these to interior and exterior lights, either by installing a new wall switch, or by plugging in to a timer if you are using a lamp. These timers can be set to illuminate your house at random, so that it won’t be such a give-away that you are not home when all of your lights spontaneously switch themselves on exactly at 7pm. You can also now get special timers that are controlled via an app so that you are able to adjust them from your smartphone whilst you’re gone.
- Get an alarm system installed
If you don’t already have one, it is usually worth investing in an alarm system if you are regularly away from home on business travel. This will keep your mind at ease that any disturbances will be picked up and dealt with whilst you’re not around, with many systems able to directly notify the police to come and check on the property if there is any unusual activity.
Nothing says ‘unoccupied property’ to potential criminals than an unkempt lawn or yard, especially if this is usually well-maintained whilst you are at home. Consider hiring a crew to take care of your landscaping if you will not be around for long periods at a time, or try convincing a friend or neighbor to mow your grass or pull those few weeds whilst you’re gone – just remember to bring them back a gift from your trip to say thanks!
If you know you’ll be gone for a long trip, consider putting a stop on your mail, or diverting it to an alternate address where it can be regularly checked. Even if you are taking a shorter trip it is still worth asking a neighbor if they could pick it up for you – the last thing you want is an overflowing mailbox that serves as a clear and obvious sign of an empty house.
