It’s no secret that traveling for work can be a stressful experience. Early mornings, crowded airports, long lines at security and the inevitable flight delays mean you’re often anxious, tense and exhausted before you even get off the ground.
Here are a few of our top tips to make sure you stay calm and relaxed when you travel for business so that you can arrive at your destination feeling refreshed and ready for whatever the day throws at you.
Practice mindfulness
There are now a myriad of books, apps, and blogs dedicated to the practice of mindfulness, which can be a real help if you find it difficult to control your anxiety. Perhaps your mind is constantly racing through the details of that report you have only half written, or to what tricky questions might come up during your next board meeting, but if you can learn to control these thoughts by learning how to focus your attention on the present moment you may find that you feel more peaceful and refreshed.
Time to switch off
Your portable technology can be a lifesaver, but it can also be a major distraction and source of stress. It might be tempting to think you’ll be saving yourself time in the long run by answering the email that just pinged through on your laptop, but this isn’t necessarily the case. Not allowing yourself time to unwind can actually make you less productive and can ultimately lead to exhaustion. Use some of your journeys to switch off altogether and permit yourself time to relax and enjoy the process of travel. Giving yourself time to mentally disengage will allow your mind to rest and recover from the stresses and strains of your daily work life.
Have something to eat
If it’s lunchtime but your stress levels are making you nauseous, you may feel tempted to skip a meal. However, it’s important to try and eat something as wholesome and filling as you can in order to help settle your stomach and increase your energy levels. Try to resist the urge for an alcoholic drink in times of stress. It can feel great in the moment but will most likely leave you bleary and unable to focus by the time you arrive at your destination.
Get some rest
Never underestimate the power of sleep. Experts agree we need between 7 and 9 hours of sleep in order to function to the best of our ability during the day, but if you struggle to get that much at night consider using downtime while you travel to take a nap. If it is a long flight, pack earplugs, an eye mask, travel pillow or anything else that will help you relax and drift off.
Book reliable ground transportation
The stresses and strains of searching out shuttle buses, public transport or waiting in an endless line at the taxi rank are sure ways to raise your stress levels through the roof. Booking our dependable Virginia car service will ensure that you are whisked to your destination in luxurious comfort by our professional chauffeurs, so you can arrive at your destination feeling rejuvenated and stress-free.
