So you’ve landed your dream job – cue celebratory drinks and anticipation for all the opportunities about to come your way! However, the reality of starting a new role can actually be more stressful than you realize, with new ways of working to get used to, new names and faces to remember, and the weight of expectation on your shoulders. Read on for our top tips on getting through that tricky first month.
Although you don’t want to overwhelm your new coworkers or boss, it is important that you ask plenty of questions during your first few weeks in any job. If you are being trained on new systems that you are unfamiliar with, ask questions whilst you are going through the process and jot down plenty of notes. It will give you immediate clarification on anything you’re unsure of and will also reassure your new workmates that you are engaged in the role and eager to learn.
- Admit when you’ve gone wrong
However incredible you might be at your new job, things will inevitable go wrong from time to time, particularly in the first few weeks whilst you take in new information and processes. Don’t be afraid to admit when you think you may have made a mistake – it is much better to own up to something so that it is easier to rectify than trying to cover up your errors and ending up in further difficulties down the line (not to mention the stress and worry it can cause!)
If possible, try and have a comprehensive catch-up meeting with your boss towards the end of the first month in your new role. This will allow you to discuss progress and will give you both the opportunity to address any particular issues before they become problematic in the future. It should also give you the chance to hear some positive feedback, which can bolster your confidence if you feel you are drowning in the amount of new information you have to take in.
Try to take in as much as you can, but if you can see an area for improvement based on your previous experience then don’t be afraid to mention it – others will appreciate that you are bringing a fresh perspective and experience to the job, after all that’s why they hired you!
- Say “yes” to social events
It is important to make an effort to get to know your co-workers and integrate into the team, so try and say “yes” to any after work drinks or casual meet-ups that you may be invited to. Even if you’re exhausted and would really rather curl up on the couch after a hard week, try to make the extra effort and go for it – you’ll reap the rewards when you are considered an integral part of the team more quickly.
