How NOT to Earn That Promotion at Work

February 27, 2018 | business travel, Virginia limousine service | Randy Allen

If you have been working in your role for a number of years it can be easy to become complacent and assume that you are on your way to earning a promotion, but don’t fall into the trap! You may not realize it, but even if you are on the path to a higher position it doesn’t mean that it’ll fall into your lap. Here are our top tips for what you should avoid if you really want to earn that coveted promotion…

  • Assuming your boss knows everything you do

You may have regular catch-ups with your boss, you might be involved in the same weekly meetings, perhaps you even work on a specific project together – but just because they are your boss don’t automatically assume that they know the ins-and-outs of your job role or what you do on a day-to-day basis. Of course, they should be aware of any significant achievements or milestones you have reached if they manage you directly, however you need to spell out all the everyday tasks and projects you work on that go largely unnoticed. Often your boss may not appreciate the amount you manage until you make it clear to them that you are capable of working at a level beyond your current role.

  • Staying silent

If you want something, ask for it. Even if co-workers have been promoted after a certain amount of time in their roles, don’t just presume that the same will apply to you and stay quiet, waiting for it to happen. Even though it may not come naturally to you, you need to be pushy here – this doesn’t mean you should be arrogant or overbearing, but you should tell your boss specifically and directly that you feel you deserve a promotion. Be prepared to back up your assertion with the appropriate evidence which will make it difficult for them to refuse you.

  • Not volunteering to take on new tasks

Just because you’ve reached saturation point in your own role and feel comfortable carrying out your responsibilities doesn’t mean you should lift your foot off the gas pedal and simply wait for a promotion to happen. Keep pushing forward and volunteering to take on new tasks and responsibilities to show that you are still passionate and enthusiastic about your job as well as the organization as a whole.

  • Not helping others

You need to demonstrate that you are a team player and that you’re willing to work together on tasks if you want to showcase your credentials for a promotion. If you stay in your own bubble and don’t get involved with another staff member it won’t reflect well. Of course, this is particularly true if your promotion will mean you’ll gain staff management responsibilities – you need to show your boss that you are capable of helping others to reach their full potential. Volunteer for a mentorship scheme or put yourself forward to buddy up with a new starter, that way your boss will be able to see that you’re ready for the next step.

When work takes you out of the office and you’re working hard to take the next step on the career ladder you need reliable and professional transportation you can trust. Whether you need a ride to the airport, a trip across town to a networking event, or you’re meeting with clients, our dependable Virginia car service will get you where you need to be without the hassle.
